Elevator compensation chains (rubberised)

Elevator compensation chains (rubberised and in a PVC sheath) for balancing the “car–counterweight” system; weight by gauge.

Description

The elevator compensation chain is a device for load compensation in the “car–counterweight” system. It is installed in the shaft, connecting the base of the car and the counterweight, and balances the weight load from the traction rope, which differs greatly between the lower and upper floors. Such balancing is necessary in buildings with a lifting height of 30 m or more.

The chain works under high loads, so selection for a specific elevator installation is important to exclude dynamic imbalance. A compensation chain usually has a construction wrapped in a PVC-rubber composite material — this reduces noise and ensures smooth operation of the elevator; chain stabilisers are used to reduce noise further.

The compensation weight is determined from the weight of the traction rope minus the weight of the travelling cable chain, after which the weight per metre of the chain is selected by the manufacturer's gauges.

Frequently asked questions

How does an elevator compensation chain differ from a traction chain?

A compensation chain does not transmit the drive force: it is installed in the shaft, connecting the base of the car and the counterweight, and balances the weight load of the “car–counterweight” system. The main parameter for selection is the weight per metre and the version, not strength as with a traction chain. The sets of standardised loads for elevator and traction chains are different, so they cannot be compared directly.

Why is the chain rubberised and which gauges are produced?

The PVC-rubber sheath reduces the noise from the chain's operation and ensures smooth running of the elevator; to reduce the noise in the shaft further, stabilisers are used. The catalog includes rubberised chains Ø7–Ø11 mm (about 1.23–2.85 kg/m) and chains in a plastic sheath Ø5.5–Ø7 mm (about 1.12–1.88 kg/m). The weight by gauge is given in the category table.

How do I select a compensation chain for our elevator installation?

The compensation weight is determined from the weight of the traction rope minus the weight of the travelling cable chain, after which the weight per metre of the chain is selected by the manufacturer's gauges. Send us the lifting height and the required compensation (or the traction rope data) — we will select a version for your installation. The criteria for taking the chain out of service and the replacement procedure are established by the servicing organisation under its own regulations.
